Before the 20th century, they were ubiquitous in the Ottoman, Persian, andRussian Empires. In more recent times, California was the largest producer, before being overtaken by Turkey, where about 95% of the production is provided by the Malatya Province.

The word ‘Raisins’ is originated from Latin word “racemes” meaning a bunch of grapes, and the scientific name is Vitas viniferous. Simply saying, a raisin is sun dried (Dried up to 80-85%) grape of certain varieties with a high content of sugar and solid flesh. Raisins are processed and eaten all over the world. Today Raisins have become a common part of daily diets.

Raisins are sun dried or oven dried dehydrated grapes. Raisins are of the size of small pebbles, raisins have wrinkled skins surrounding chewy flesh that tastes like a burst of sugary sweetness.

At present the largest commercial producers of raisins are California, Australia, Turkey, Greece, Iran and Chile

India has been the producer of Raisin since 1983. In the crop year 2009 around 100000 MT was produced in India.

Nutritional Valueof Raisins

Raisins are the best source of quick energy, as they contain 70 percent pure fructose, which gets digested by the body easily and gives instant energy.Raisins can contain up to 72% sugars by weight, most of which is fructose and glucose. The top producer of hazelnuts, by a large margin, is Turkey, specifically Giresun Province and Ordu. Turkish hazelnut production of 625,000 tonnes accounts for approximately 75% of worldwide production. Nutella consumes 25% of global supply

Nutritional Valueof Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are rich in protein and unsaturated fat. Moreover, they contain significant amounts of thiamine and vitamin B6, as well as smaller amounts of other B vitamins. Technically a walnut is the seed of a drupe or drupaceous nut, and thus not a true botanical nut.

The worldwide production of walnuts has been increasing rapidly in recent years, with the largest increase coming from Asia. The world produced a total of 2.55 million metric tonnes of walnuts in 2010; China was the world’s largest producer of walnuts, with a total harvest of 1.06 million metric tonnes. The other major producers of walnuts were (in the order of decreasing harvest): Iran, United States, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico, Romania, India, France and Chile.

Walnuts not only taste good, but they provide essential nutrients and are cholesterol free. Their positive affect on the heart can be especially attributed to the high content of alpha linolenic acid. Almond

Almonds are believed to be a native of Western Asia and North Africa. They have been consumed by human beings since ancient Greek and Roman times. At present they are widely grown in the Mediterranean countries and also in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and California.

In the mid 1700’s, the almond tree was brought to California from Spain. Over the years through cross breading and research, many varieties of almonds are now grown in many regions across the globe.

Portuguese sailors brought the seeds of the cashew nut trees from Brazil and planted them on the east coast of Africa.
